How to Get Your Police Competency Certificate to Own or Use a Firearm in South Africa

firearm competency certificate South AfricaIf you want to own a firearm for personal protection or need to carry one as part of your job, you’ll first need to get your Police Competency Certificate. Without this certificate, it’s illegal to own, purchase, or work with a firearm in South Africa. The process might seem overwhelming at first, but with the right guidance, it’s straightforward.

At Milites Dei Academy (MDA), we don’t just provide accredited firearm training — we also assist our students through the entire process of obtaining their competency. Here’s exactly how you can get started:

Step 1: Complete Accredited Firearm Training

The first and most important step is to successfully complete firearm training with a PFTC-accredited training provider. Depending on your needs, you’ll train with one or more types of firearms, such as:

  • Handgun

  • Shotgun

  • Self-loading Rifle

  • Manually Operated Rifle

At Milites Dei Academy, we provide training for all four types, ensuring you’re fully prepared, whether for personal use or professional duties.

Step 2: Receive Your Training Certificate

Once you’ve passed your theoretical and practical assessments, you’ll receive a Statement of Results from the training provider and a Proficiency Certificate from the PFTC (Professional Firearms Training Council). These documents are essential for your police application.

Step 3: Complete the SAPS Competency Application Form

Next, you’ll need to complete SAPS Form 517 (Application for Competency Certificate). This form requires personal details, firearm motivation, and supporting documentation such as:

  • Certified ID copy

  • Proof of residence

  • Your training certificates

  • firearm competency certificate South Africa

    Two passport-sized photos

  • Any other supporting documents

Step 4: Submit Your Application at Your Nearest Police Station

Finally, take your completed application and documents to your nearest police station’s Firearm Licensing Office. Here, your fingerprints will be taken, and your application will be processed. Background checks will also be conducted by the SAPS.
